Sometimes we need to look at the past to understand how we can improve the here and now. Sometimes, we need to look at what we do every day to realize a risky move has become a habit. This course will look at lessons learned in remote surgery centers during war years that need to be reintroduced today to improve patient outcomes. We will identify recent studies identifying the role foreign debris in ASC procedures can be attracted to instruments, implanted in patients and cause complications including joint inflammation, blood clots, granulomas, adhesions, peritonitis, endophthalmitis, spinal meningitis and increased risk of infection. In this age of the waning antibiotic effectiveness and increased patient vulnerability, it is increasingly critical that we prevent post-surgical complications before they occur. This course will focus on several areas where we currently put patients at risk that can be corrected tomorrow.

Wava Truscott, PhD., is Director of Medical Sciences & Clinical Education for Kimberly-Clark Health Care. Her doctorate is in Comparative Pathology emphasizing Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology from the University of California. Her MBA is from the University of La Verne and her BS from Brigham Young University (BYU). Earlier in her career, Wava evaluated the safety and efficacy of medical devices at MIDECO Independent Laboratories, Managed the Biological Laboratories for the Pharmaseal Division of Baxter Healthcare, and was Vice President of Scientific Affairs for the SafeSkin Corporation. She spent years researching latex allergy from profiling the allergens derived from tapping the plantation trees, processing the latex and producing the gloves to developing ways to remove the offending proteins.
Dr. Truscott has authored over 70 articles, co-authored the Microbiological section of the AAMI Sterilization Recommended Practices, and served as the U.S. delegate to the International Standards Organization on Biocompatibility Testing of Medical Devices regarding Systemic Toxicity (ISO 10993-11) as the European Union was forming. She recently authored an extensive petition to the FDA requesting a ban on all powdered gloves used in healthcare and is currently the ASTM Chairman of the committee charged with developing test methods for medical gloves incorporated with antimicrobial agents.
