DESCRIPTION:
This presentation will address transport techniques, cleaning and inspection, packaging, as well as the actual sterilization process. Based on the Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) guidelines, Robin will explain the guidelines as they apply to your sterile processing department. If you are not currently the one doing the processing, yet you are the Infection Preventionist, DON or Administrator, this session is valuable to you as you are ultimately responsible for the end result.
Reprocessing and disinfection remain top priorities for patient safety and surgical site infection reduction. Surveyors are carefully scrutinizing facility practices. Therefore, it is crucial for the reprocessing team and key organization stakeholders to effectively recognize potential lapses in the wash, IUSS, sterilization and high-level disinfection routines.
Implementation of AAMI guidelines is expected by CMS, AAAHC, TJC and AAAASF. 85% of variables affecting the outcome of the steam sterilization process are the result of human error. Often staff are self- taught without much direction, or wrongly directed by another staff member. This session will define the basic steps necessary for compliance.
This session will explore how wet packs happen, the proper way to sterilize hinged instruments, what should be done when discolored instruments occur and much more. Live sessions will have an opportunity for you to ask questions, recorded sessions will offer an email connection for follow up questions from viewers.
The participant will be able to:
- List key steps in the sterilization/ high-level disinfection process
- Recognize sterilization/ high-level disinfection irregularities
- Identify cause of instrument discoloration
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Sterile Processing Technicians and anyone involved in the pre-cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of the instruments. If you are not currently the one doing the processing, yet you are the Infection Preventionist, DON or Administrator, this session is valuable to you as you are ultimately responsible for the end result.
