OSHA Required Sharps Injury Prevention Program

Most recent federal and state OSHA citation information available indicates an increase in violations to medical and dental practices and ambulatory surgery centers. 

During that time, OSHA issued 867 violations to medical practices and ASC’s an increase of 18% from the previous year.

Dental practices received 468 violations, a 16% increase from the previous year.

Because we have yet to see the expected improvement in sharps injuries from these facilities after the enactment of the 2001 Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act, there is a call to action by many of the government, accrediting medical agencies. To help you prepare we have created a comprehensive program that will assist you in evaluating your organization, train your staff (including housekeeping) and institute a formal QA/PI program.  OSHA fines include employers who fail to analyze their incidents for employee protection.

It has been well documented that you have a 1 in 50 chance of becoming contaminated with Hepatitis C if you have a sharps injury. And a 1 in 300 chance of HIV. Have you done ALL you can do to prevent injuries for yourself and your employees?  This discussion should take place annually and then routinely as a gentle reminder.
