This one hour presentation by Cathy Montgomery, RN, CASC and Robin Novak, RN, CIC will discuss and define antibiotic stewardship programs that are currently mandated in hospitals and long term care facilities and how the ambulatory surgery center should begin preparation. Antibiotic resistance is widely recognized as a critical threat to public health. And the problem seems to be getting worse. All healthcare facilities and professionals are being asked to do their part. Already mandated in LTC, proposed for hospitals as a mandate, and now Antibiotic Stewardship Programs have made their way into the ASC world! Missouri requires its Ambulatory Surgery Centers to have one in place by August 28, 2017. Due to Federal discussions, other states will likely follow suite.

Cathy has over 20 years of experience in healthcare services management. During her position as Regional Manager for Barnes Hospital, Cathy oversaw several physician practices. As Regional Administrator for Novamed, she oversaw operations of the physician practices, as well as the ambulatory surgery centersCathy Montgomery and optical shops in the Metro St. Louis and Illinois areas. Cathy founded Excellentia Advisory Group in 2009 and since then has provided regulatory compliance consultation, training and other services to over 2000 surgery centers across the United States. Cathy is also an ambulatory surgery center surveyor for AAAASF. Cathy does numerous public speaking engagements on ASC regulatory compliance at multiple State ASC Associations and national conferences.

Robin has served as the SGNA Carolina Chapter President, involved in SGNA Practice Committee as well as a Regional Committee member for the past several years.  Robin is a current member of Palmetto APIC as well as the national APIC. Robin has been employed at the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Spartanburg since 2004 and held roles of Endoscopy Nurse, Endoscopy Charge Nurse and currently the Quality Assurance Process Improvement Coordinator.  Robin is currently employed as the Director of Infection Prevention for Excellentia Advisory Group.

 

DESCRIPTION:

This one hour session will explain the current regulatory environment and define what a stewardship program should contain.  Our program is based on the CDC recommendations and we will be providing you with the required policy and checklists. We have put these in word documents so that you can customize them for your facility. As well we have for you therapeutic guidelines for commonly used antimicrobials for surgical prophylaxis so you don’t have to hunt for them. Robin and Cathy have simplified the process for you, these tools and described program with allow you to quickly get your facility up to speed.  This session, once you obtain your certificate of participation, will suffice as part of your infection control training for 2017!
